Blog 8: English Language Challenges

Hi! we've reached the last blog of the semester jsjs :D
This time I have to write about my experience learning English at the University.

Before talking about it, I must mention that since I was a child I never had the proper stimulation to recognize the phonemes of English, neither at home nor in my primary school. I was never encouraged to learn the language, And I did not find it useful in my daily life, no one explained to me how important it can be to learn it. When I was in high school I began to take more importance of the English language, but nevertheless the hearing deficiencies and the low spirits acquired during my first 14 years with respect to learning the language prevented me from progressing (in addition to the fact that the teacher's voice bothered my ears quite a bit).

Once in the University, I started from the lowest level of English, at that time I was forced to improve since I had a trip scheduled to Texas, USA, with competitive reasons, but still I think that not achieve significant improvements. From what I have seen, the University's approach to learning English is to practice. I know very well that "practice makes perfect", but this costs me a lot and sometimes discourages me, because I try to practice something of which I do not have much knowledge.}

I try to resort to my basic vocabulary, trying to make use of my musical ear that I have been developing to be able to understand better when someone speaks in English, although most of the time I can't keep up, and I fall behind.

Sometimes I get the impression that the English we practice in the classroom is everyday English, and honestly, I don't feel it has much use for me (unless I plan to live in an English-speaking country). I have noticed that I find the "academic language" of biological and psychological science less difficult, for example, when reading scientific articles (although I still find it quite complicate), I think it is because I feel it is more important to me than the language of "everyday life".

This year I think I liked the English classes more, mainly because of the literature used in the classes, since I had never read any poems in English, besides the fact that they talked about quite interesting historical and social events. I also liked the blog topics and the videos, since they were more focused on aspects of the career and things that I like.

Outside of English classes I don't use English much, sometimes I listen to songs in this language, although lately with luck I've had time to breathe hjhj. I can't watch many movies in English, since I always watch with my parents and they don't like it:c. I think I only use English to read some articles or look for bibliography for some university works.
